No, the ending doesn't seem forced. It is just a radio play. It was meant as entertainment, and the entertainment part of this isn't exactly the plot, but the character of the actress playing this part.
If the ending would be unrealistic like in a modern 21st century to be continued story it would have the man in the wheel chair suddenly get up and turn into a werewolf and chase the screaming woman out into the moonlit, dark backyard which turns into a thick brush and vine wilderness with snakes and swamp gas and maybe a bug eyed alien joining the fray!
