Sam, your tantilizing stories kept me up late nights,on the edge of my seat, even though I had school in the morning. Thank you for opening my imagination thru radio. You and the actors here on the RMT are truley talented and yet grossly unappreciated. If I could, I would give you an Oscar! Thanks a million!

Mark Cortino

Did Sam Dann ever have a day off, get tired, or simply take a break? He seemed to write as if it were as simple as boiling an egg. I am very, very impressed.

Robert RJMGREEN@AOL.COM

I just stumbled onto this site/forum/whatever in looking to see if Sam was still alive. Happy to see he hasn't passed. His stories will live on for generations. I hope Sam is still able to appreciate our comments. I have a complete (I think) RMT collection and am always glad when I hear an episode was written by Sam Dann. All the writers were good, but Sam's writings were consistently among the best. You continue to entertain me with your brilliant works, Sam. Thank you!

Bob

As a devoted listener to CBS radio mystery theater, as often as not, I hear that Sam Dan wrote the script. I am trying to fathom how he could have been so prolific! According to the web notes, he wrote 311 scripts for CBS radio mystery theater, but apparently appeared in more than that. I was dismayed to find very little information about him when searching the web, and believe this major contributor to radio theater, as well as other media dramatic shows, deserves more recognition than he has gotten. I spent some time searching for an image of Sam Dann on Google images, and while, under his name, I found large numbers of images of other writers and actors on CBS radio mystery theater, there was not a single image of Sam Dann. Who can find an image of Sam Dann, or a more detailed biography?

David

here is also another thing I've always been curious about. Is Victoria Dann, (one of the other CBSRMT writers/actors), related to Sam Dann?

Adam

According to other threads on this site, she’s his daughter.

Martin L. Shoemaker

I know! It's amazing to me that he was able to crank out so much stuff. He really was the best!

For whatever reason, the only names I remember hearing more than once during the original run (besides Marshall’s) are Fred Gynne (who could forget Herman Munster) and Sam Dann. I think Dann’s alliterative sounding name stuck with me. I’m on hiatus from CBSRMT; initially, rediscovering the show was a blessing for my insomniac tendencies, but after hearing all 1,399 episodes about five times you start losing your mind. I remember reading somewhere that Dann turned a number of his shows into short story collections. I tend to think of Dann and Ian Martin as grinders—able to turn out lot’s of product, some of it pretty good, a lot of it awful. It’s pretty evident to me that Hi Brown could turn to either when he just had to have a script, but there were other writers who worked a lot harder to create a quality product.

Andrew

Ian Martin was almost as prolific and he appeared regularly as a player too.

Bill

He is in my heart

And you have been there before

According to Himan Brown, Sam's first love was radio, and he worked with Brown back in radio's early days. Sam reportedly wrote 311 episodes of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater for Himan Brown. One of which, "Goodbye, Karl Erich," won BEST RADIO DRAMATIC SCRIPT at the 1975 Writers Guild of America Annual Script Awards, and was published as a novel ten years later.
