The secret of the three cards: "Three, seven, ace! Three, seven, queen!" ("It's not the queen of spades, it's the countess!") According to Wikipedia, Pushkin's short story was published in 1834, and was the basis for Tchaikovsky's 1890 ballet of the same name.

What a jerk the main character is, but at least we know his motivations. A good story but I do wonder what the ballet is like.

What a fool the main character is! He really expected the countess (murder victim) to help him win at gambling after he murdered her for the secret numbers. Wow, sometimes stupid just can't be beat, lol! Bryna Raeburn was very good in her role as the countess, and her sinister laughter at the end was very chilling.

Lt. Alexy Petrovich Hermann, a German engineer in the Czar’s army, had never joined his comrades as they gambled -- until he learns that elderly Countess Fedotovna holds the secret on how to win at faro. Extracting that secret from her becomes the lieutenant’s only reason for living. When he finally manages to confront her, she dies from fright, but her ghost later reveals the secret to him. However, he soon learns what he has met is a revengeful, not a friendly ghost.
