I remember hearing this episode around the Bicentennial. Lloyd Bochner did a great job playing George Washington.

A headless spectre first frightens, then helps General George Washington's troops on the eve of their assault on Trenton.

Effective Revolutionary War tale, if a little hokey. Can't help imagining the cast breaking up when they kept repeating the title throughout.

It's nice to listen to a CBSRMT episode, written by Sam Dann, where the story takes place during the Revolutionary War. Good title for this episode, but a great title for this should be called "The Intangible". Also, it's nice to hear E.G. Marshall telling the audience about certain events of American History, however, he forgot to mention that the Battle of Trenton in New Jersey took place on December 26th, 1776. I enjoyed this particular cast: Lloyd Bochner (as General George Washington), Jack Grimes (as Private Tom Caldwell the Flute Player), Marriette Hartley (as Peggy Mason), Robert Maxwell (as Sergeant Meadows), and the legendary Casey Kasem (as Lieutenant Piel). All of them played their parts sincere and were compelling. The sound effects of the windy nights, the horses galloping & neighing, and guns firing off at the very end were perfectly suited in this tale, but the music of the flute was a delightful touch. To hear the music of the flute, it plays at the 5-minute 43-second mark, 6-minute 2-second mark, 16-minute 56-second mark, 17-minute 41-second mark, 18-minute 24-second mark, 36-minute 48-second mark, 37-minute mark, and 40-minute 12-second mark. Finishing the episode off with patriotic music at the 41-minute 11-second mark was splendid. If you like stories about American History and/or if you were a fan of Casey Kasem, check this episode out.

I thought the story was very interesting and held my attention well. I love the idea of using the headless horseman as a battle tactic! History is full of examples of every tactic that can be thought of and some tactics being very unconventional to try and get an edge on the enemy! Well why not this? If they are disposed to believing it and it will scare them then sure use it!

When I listen to radio drama I like to get out of contemporary times and this episode certainly takes you away with romance, humor, and of course battle. Lloyd Bochner is one of my favorite actors. For someone who usually plays the stuffiest Brit (as in Hong Kong on TV or an episode of Hogan's Heroes) its cool to hear him personify George Washington. He was Canadian so it seemed he rolled that accent back to where it could be mistaken for an antique Virginia one. Works for me. Look him up at IMDB to see more of his credits. I like the sideways nod to the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow in the story too. Young love will not be stopped and actually helps win the war.

A fairly good bicentennial story. A good listen with Casey Casem in his last CBSRMT role.

Headless Hessian is one of the first shows I ever heard KNX1070 out of L.A. but heard it while riding in car in New Mexico, great show.

Superb cast. Haunting flute sounds. Dreamy sound effects. Love the horse hooves beating loudly along with the performers' dialogues. Fitting for the revolutionary era was the title of this episode. Lastly, twas flabbergasting to discover the Headless Hessian's purpose of this tale.

I loved Lloyd Bochner's portrayal of George Washington. He truly brings him to life as someone with good qualities, but at the same time a realistic person who is believable. I love his accent too. This is the best portrayal of George Washington I have ever heard. The story is very interesting, and the young soldier is entertaining. I enjoyed this episode very much.

Follow up.... Also the musical flute the soldier plays is a very nice touch. it really sets the mood and the time period.
