The plot synopsis says the store in this story is located in the Caribbean. It's actually located in Durna, Libya. The same store is used as a plot device in a later episode called "Devil's Gold."

This episode has just the right amount of intrigue and fable.

A vein fashion designer finds a quaint and haunting boutique in a remote resort city in the Carribean. She steals some of the shopkeepers designs. Her justice is slow, excrutiating, and ironic. You don't steal from the Devil.

An internationally redound and extremely vain fashion designer takes one of her gentleman friends and her daughter on a cruise where, at one stop, the captain suggests searching out the Devil’s Boutique saying that other passengers have spoken highly of it, and while he has never been there himself, he is sure it will prove an interesting experience. Finding the little shop she sees fashion designs that are beyond compare. She arranges to distract the shop owner and make some sketches to copy the designs for herself, but when the shop owner discovers her she expects him to be angry. Rather, he gives her a gift of earrings and lipstick.

This was a very good episode. It had an inventive story and the characters were more interesting than usual. Good sound quality and well-produced. I enjoyed the Vincent Price sound-alike.

One of my favorite episodes, I can listen to it over and over again without getting bored.

Same here! I appreciate Joan Loring more & more. She also played the ghastly title character in Poe's 'Berenice'

I love this episode, I've been listening to it and relistening to it every night when I go to bed. This would have made a great ABC Movie of The Week thriller in the 70s.

Earrings, lipstick, cruise... The Devil's Boutique, one of my favorites. Elvira deserved everything that happened to her. She was even unkind to her daughter. She could have had the earrings surgically removed, then a little touch up by a plastic surgeon, but noooo, she just had to go back to try to find that darn shop keeper!

An interesting story about an unlikable woman who got what she deserved. One would wonder why her husband, Tony, would stay with her (unless it was just for the money).

Tony wasn't her husband, he was her escort. He did it for exposure cause he was an actor.

I agree with the comments above. I have listened to this episodes many times and even enjoyed episode by same writer Devils Gold.

I'm taking a long car trip next week and I'm picking out some CBSRMT's to listen to... I'll add this one to my list.

The Devil's Boutique is a well-written and well-performed Mystery Theater episode akin to a high-quality Twilight Zone, with excellent development of characters who the listener grows to genuinely care about and suspense building to a dramatic reveal. The recording is super quality. At times in Mystery Theater, superb music & score is used to build suspense and I was surprised it was not used more in this episode. Instead, a feeling of dreadful overshadowing is accompanied by the frequent blowing of the ocean liner's horn. I've never heard this episode before now and I can see why it is a widely held favorite. Best supporting actor goes to the the protagonist fashion designer's male companion. I love his voice - Very Vincent Price-like. I'll also be looking for more episodes written by Bob Juhren on CBSRMT.COM. I give Devil's Boutique 4 out of 5 stars. - JUROR #4

Surreal and ghastly!!! This tale has a dream like quality about it..did Elvira really find the mysterious boutique, or as it all a dream?? I began to wonder if it was my third aperitif doing the talking!! At any rate, is vanity really a punishable offense?? Find out in this seat sqirmer. If you don’t believe me, go ask Larry!!

Elvira Graham, one of the world’s top fashion designers, visits in Derna, Libya, what is described to her by a cruise ship’s captain as a most unusual clothing and accessories shop, known as The Devil’s Boutique. Fascinated by the shop’s wares, Elvira is caught sketching some of the designs. Instead of having her arrested, the boutique’s owner gives her a set of earrings and a lipstick that she proudly wears, only to discover later that no matter what she does, neither will come off.

What a creepy story--but Elvira certainly got what she deserved. Bob Juhren wrote some very good stories . He was my favorite Mystery Theater writer.
