Spoiler alert...I don't understand the point of stealing bonds if you are going to pay off the value anyway. Why go through this elaborate scheme if there is no profit?

I expect the bonds were being sold to someone using a different broker, and that someone would have paid Mrs Paul 100k for them. Mrs Paul's brokerage didn't expect to pay her for them.
